What lingers after gardens? Memory of colour and dirt? A skill for pruning? A residue of a choreography gone to seed?
Through poetry, musings and photographs, Stolon Press offers three brief pieces: Charlie Sofo on the suburban garden as a place of longing and disappointment; Simryn Gill on photographing weeds in her parents’ garden, the last time she turned her camera on it; and Judy Annear on moving to the country which, as she says, ‘is one big garden’.

Judy Annear Speaker
Judy Annear is a researcher & writer who has been living in Central Victoria on Dja Dja Wurrung Country, never ceded. She mostly writes on words & images. Her last publication was soundings, for Stolon Press. She is an Honorary Fellow at the University of Melbourne School of Culture & Communication.
Simryn Gill Speaker
Simryn Gill is an artist who lives between Sydney, Australia, and Port Dickson, Malaysia. Her working methods include making collections, photographs, drawing and writing. Recent work has been shown at Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; Buxton Contemporary, Melbourne; Drawing Room, London; Gropius Bau, Berlin.
Charlie Sofo Speaker
Charlie Sofo was born in Melbourne, where he currently lives and makes art. Since 2006, Sofo has exhibited widely and presented public talks and performances. He occasionally writes. He is also on the board of Artery Cooperative and is a lecturer in the Fine Art program at Monash University. His recent solo exhibition was Tutto, Deakin University Art Gallery, Melbourne, 2022.
